It’s important to understand that every business needs a website. In today”s day and age it’s not an option, it’s a must.
I have one client who feels she can do everything on Facebook.
When she first started on Facebook with her business she couldn’t afford a website. At that time Facebook was letting you reach a lot more people.
That’s no longer the case. As a matter of fact I was on a webinar where Mari Smith said about 2% of your fans are getting your news feed updates.
That makes having a website even more important than ever.
Since you need a website you are probably wondering how much it costs to have one built.
Take a look at this infographic:
Your domain name is extremely important. For example the other day I received an email from a company. They were changing their business name and domain.
The name they chose told me nothing about what their business is about. Their other name did.
Wanting to be unique and different people will name their business something quirkily and cute. The problem? Nobody knows right away what they do.
For example my domain name is: Toni Nelson Means Business. The domain tells you who I am and what I do. One of my other websites is Nelson Visual Productions. Again, that tells you what the site is about.
You have many choices when it comes to registering your domain name. Think about your name long and hard before making your decision.
Your domain name is part of your branding.
You have a many choices when it comes to hosting. Do your research and find out if there are hidden fees or restrictions.
You want to make sure that your design represents your brand.
When it comes to the design you need to know what your objectives are.
Can you use a pre-made design? That’s up to you.
Your website needs to be not only visually appealing but easy to navigate.
When I work with clients one of the areas we focus on is the use of visuals. Visuals help you brand your business.
Having the right visuals on your website is extremely important.
There are stock photography sites to find these visuals. As award winning Photographers sometimes our clients hire us to take photos for them.
We even create product imagery to be used in your advertising materials as well as banners, book covers etc.
Here’s an example of what I mean:
This type of imagery helps people to see the virtual product. It can help them make a buying decision.
When I created my first website I decided on 5 major pages. You need to decide the pages that are important for your website.
As for the content on your site:
Will you outsourcer it? Do it yourself?
Many years ago I got a great piece of advice. Learn to do it yourself first. That means if I teach people to do something or I do it for them as a service, I’ve done it myself. I can’t do or teach what I haven’t done.
I had to learn about copywriting.
Always remember that you want quality content on your website if you want to be viewed as the expert you are.
If you want your website to have certain functions such as a forum or membership area that is going to cost you more.
Take it from someone who has tried several membership platforms – it’s a lot of work.
As you think about your website consider if you will be selling your products. If you don’t know how to set up an ecommerce site you will need to hire someone who does.
Now we get to the cost….
Your starting point is going to depend on the type of site you are looking for.
Brochure sites can range from $1190 – $3000
A brochure is a basic site and usually consists of 4 or 5 pages.
A membership site can range from $2235 – $10,000.
E-Commerce sites can range from $2600 – $10,000
You do have the option of learning how to create your own website.
If you take this path get the proper training. Find out how to build the right website for your particular needs.
At all times you want to have a professional presence. That means quality design, content and imagery.
Think about the users experience as mentioned above.
Did you build your website or have someone do it for you?
How much did you pay?
