It seems everyone is talking about the new changes Gmail has made.
If you don’t have a Gmail account here’s what people are talking about.
Gmail is now categorizing your email for you. Great right?
Well, maybe not.
Many people receive emails for promotions ranging from Best Buy to that website you visited and asked for information.
Gmail now puts all of those into the promotions folder for you. If you assumed that it was just a messsage from Best Buy, Office Depot or any sites like that you could be missing out on the valuable newsletter you signed up for.
What this means is you now have to check each of your folders for your messages.
There is something you can do. 1) if you are receiving an email from someone who Gmail considers a “promotion” take the email and drag it into the primary folder at the top.
2) Make sure you not open the email to do this Just go to the listing of all your emails and drag the ones you want into your primary account.
This is having a huge impact on marketers because Gmail is considering all these emails as promotions.
It would seem like I’m one of the only ones who actually likes what Gmail has done.
I’ve written before about organizing and cleaning out your email account to avoid clutter and save time.
To me this is the perfect way to save time. So far I like the fact that I can go through all three folders easily.
For example I can go to my promotions folder and see who is sending what. These emails should not be the ones you need to see first thing in the morning saving you time.
I can then head over to my social folder and check it out. This is perfect for me because I can then spend my alloted time for social media partially here.
My primary folder is the one that shows up when I open my Gmail these are my “most important” emails. This saves me time because I go to these first in the morning eliminating all that scrolling and sorting in the morning. For me that’s a time saver.
What this means for any of us who market our products, services or send out newsletters etc is that we have to notify our list of what’s going on and ask them to pu us in the primary account.
This will also change the messages we send out to people when they join our email list.
We will have to add in that they must add us to their primary account or risk the chance of missing out on our great offers or information.
Once everyone gets used to this new change I think many more will appreciate the set up.
I read a lot on this from people being upset that Gmail is making this decision for you to marketers who are concerned their message won’t be received.
If you are using Gmail what do you think? Do you like that your Gmail is being put into these three categories for you? Or do you feel Gmail should have left if the way it was?
