The Knot’s Carly Roney & David Liu….
Although this is Wednesday’s Woman I also want to share with you inspirational married couples who are in business.
Having worked with my husband for over 25 years we enjoy learning about how other couples started their journey together.
Bringing their stories to you are inspirational and motivational.
Yes you can do it too!
Remember if you can dream it you can achieve it!
Today I’m sharing with you the story of Carly Roney and David Liu. This married couple Co-founded The Knot.
My first goal as a wedding photographer/videographer was to receive that coveted The Knot Best of Weddings. We did receive that honor and I was thrilled! So to be able to talk not only about this couple but their business brings me great pleasure.
The Knot was founded in 1996. Since then they have not only The Knot but The Bump and The Nest.
It’s estimated that 80% of the women planning a wedding join The Knot. Every bride whether on The Knot or not knows about the company.
In my book I talk about researching your business. This takes time and effort and education.
That’s exactly what this couple did. They learned everything they could about weddings.
What I found really interesting is that they went to film school with the other two co-founders of the company. Each of them had their own unique areas of expertise.
While you look at the popularity of The Knot today and think your business couldn’t be that big or successful keep in mind that they worked 16 hours a day seven days a week in the beginning to get things going.
David Liu said they had their first child 15 minutes after getting their first venture capitol financing. Talk about stress!
Here’s what I loved learning about a the couple. They brought the baby to work with them. How encouraging is that! You can do that when it’s your company.
When they had to get on a conference call they made sure the baby was somewhere else with a staff member.
That brings to mind how in the past I’ve had people calling me and offering their services and in the background you hear a baby crying or the dog barking. Very unprofessional! They made sure they didn’t have that problem.
How is this publicly traded company doing now? They are debt free with 70 million in cash according to David Liu in an interview with Business Insider.
What I found so encouraging was that The Knot employs 650 people and 80% of those are women! That’s a great percentage don’t you think?
As an award winning videographer any time I see a business use video for their business I applaud them. The Knot uses video quite a bit. They researched their target audience (brides) and then offer them the advice and tips they need to plan the wedding of their dreams. They provide these tips via videos on their YouTube Channel.
I can tell you from personal experience that the company is customer driven. When we advertised on The Knot I dealt with some really wonderful women who were truly concerned with the success of our business.
Keep that in mind with your own business. Will people say you listened to them, offered great advice, great customer service?
What point did you take away from this couples brief story?
If you are a photographer/videographer have you ever advertised on The Knot?
