I tell all my clients that the number one thing they need to do is network. It’s part of your visibility strategy.
There are many bonuses you receive from networking such as the one I had recently. More on that later:)
Recently I attended a power lunch in Tampa help at the Double Tree Suites by Hilton. Working Women Of Tampa Bay put on the event.
One of the things I look forward to is meeting different people and this event was no different. I was able to connect with a few women I had never met. As a matter of fact one of them is going to have me speak to her group! (This was not the bonus).
I am always tempted to bring my professional camera with me but since I have an iPhone5 I use that and I’m so glad I had it at this event!
This venue was a totally different setting than other networking events I’ve attended. We started out by the pool which was beautiful
Then I saw a closed tent and wondered if we would be having lunch there. The answer was yes!
Right away I was impressed with the tent when we walked in. It was clean and well lit. I have to be honest and tell you that the tent was in better condition than some of the ones I’ve seen when photographing and filming weddings.
This was the view we had outside the “windows” of the tent:
Tampa is definitely a beautiful area!
The power lunch networking event focused on getting media exposure. Why is media coverage important? It gives you more visibility.
As with anything there is a right and wrong way to go about getting media coverage. That’s partially what the four panelists talked about.
These are the panelists for the event:
Stacie Schaible – First at Four Anchor, Newschannel 8
Kat Hughes – Executive Editor, The Business Observer
Diane Egner – Publisher & Managing Editor, 83 Degrees
Beth Ann Drake – Publisher, duPont Registry
There was a question asked by someone in the group about being an expert on TV. Stacie Schaible from News channel 8 mentioned they do have people who are “experts”. These people are considered experts in their industry. She also said these people are reliable. In other words if they need experts they are available and show up.
Now you are asking, “what makes a person an expert”? Here are a few factors to consider.
1) Writing a book in your industry
2) Experience in your industry
3) Your expertise has been featured in a magazine
4) This one is obvious. You’ve been on TV sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Another question asked was how far in advance are they looking for stories. Kat Hughes mentioned that it’s usually about 4 weeks out depending on the type of story they are writing. They are always collecting information.
Of course the panel talked about the digital world we live in. Beth Ann Drake said that they know their audience really well. They have various luxury magazines and people love to grab a glass of wine and look through the physical magazine.
The topic of pitching was addressed as well. The panel was asked what their pet peeves are. Stacie mentioned that the news isn’t there for you to pitch your product. That’s what advertising is for. If you have something that’s newsworthy and your product fits in that might be different.
There were a number of tidbits shared and I enjoyed the way the group was moderated.
Everyone had a chance to respond to the question which enabled us to hear the answers from their unique perspective.
So what was the bonus at this networking event?
As we were gathering to go into the tent we were told that Jesse Campbell who was on season 2 of The Voice was there!
My favorite show is The Voice. What excites me about the show is the fact that people are going after their dreams. I also like the way the coaches can’t see what the singer looks like. This is an important feature of the show.
Keep in mind this video is not shot with my “professional” video camera. It’s taken with my iPhone5 which did a pretty good job. I was also squeezed in by everyone else who was taking video while trying not to fall into the pool!
Pretty cool right? You never know what awaits you when you go to networking events. Now granted this was a special bonus but I want you to understand just how important it is for you to make these relationship building connections.
As a matter of fact why don’t you download my free report? I think there will be some tidbits of information that you will find really helpful.
