Did you know that October is National Women’s Small Business Month?
I’ve asked quite a few female entrepreneurs and they had no idea.
There are so many things going on in the news and in our businesses but this is a big deal for us.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration women owned businesses are among the fastest g rowing segment of small business.
Women now own approximately 30% of small businesses in the country. That’s a far cry from the 5% women owned in 1970.
Cox Business surveyed 624 women business owners in the U.S.
Let’s take a look at why some women start a business.
One of the top factors (61%) said they wanted to be the boss.
Other women (52%) wanted to control their own destiny
Pursuing their passion accounted for 47%.
I thought it was interesting that 73% say they’ve experienced gender bias and 55% said there’s a lack of opportunity in certain industries for women.
I’ve read about several young women in the tech industry who are trying to change that.
What can we do to help other women in business?
As business owners we need to empower other women so they can start or grow their business.
That’s why when I’m asked to speak on topics like networking, video, blogging etc I’m more than happy to do so because I know there’s so much knowledge and expertise I love to share.
When you see another person’s eyes light up because something you said struck a cord it’s a very rewarding feeling.
When I started my first business over 27 years ago I would have loved listening to other women sharing their knowledge.
I think it’s so important that we support each other.
I think it’s wonderful that Cox Business took the time to interview these women and share these figures. It was interesting to see the responses from the women surveyed.
What I’d like to know is: why did you start your business?
If you haven’t started your business what’s holding you back?
