How this 3 letter word can help you create a product.
The 3-letter word your business needs to use is Ask!
One major mistake many companies make is that they do not ask their customers what it is they are looking.
As a business owner are you making this mistake? Here’s an example of a company who thought they knew what their customers wanted.
Had they done their research and asked the right questions their results would have been different.
We are going to talk about Oreo cookies and its travel to China.
Since Oreos are such a success in United States the company felt that of course they’d be a big success in China.
Who doesn’t like to dunk their Oreos in milk? The Chinese.
It turns out the thought of dipping cookies in milk wasn’t part of their tradition.
Had they asked their potential customers what they thought about the Oreo cookie? No.
The result of their launch was unsuccessful to say the least.
It could have been different had they asked the proper questions. Once they started asking questions here’s what they found:
Oreos were a foreign concept to the Chinese.
Dipping cookies in milk wasn’t part of their tradition (as mentioned above).
The cookies were too sweet.
They didn’t like round shape of the cookie.
Now that they had their results what did they do?
They took all the data they received and relaunched the Oreos.
The shape of the Oreos was now rectangular.
The taste was now slightly different.
Whatever objection they received they quickly remedied it.
The results? The cookies were a success.
What can we as business owners learn from this companies mistakes?
We need to know our customers inside out. We need to know their likes and their dislikes.
What are some ways to do that?
1) Start asking. Ask your clients/customers what it is they need or want. Asking is so much easier than you “thinking” you know what people want. Let them tell you!
2) Take customer polls – Taking a poll is a form of research to find out what people are looking for.
3) Use surveys – People are more apt to respond to a survey if it’s quick and easy so don’t make them too complicated.
4) Send out a newsletter to your subscribers and ask them, “What challenges are you having in your business”.
If that doesn’t yield the results you are looking for then ask them “What do you want”. “What type of product would you find helpful”?
This is a great way to really get into the mind of what your customers are looking for.
Hubspot is a perfect e sample of this. They offer free templates, images, marketing tips etc. When you put in your information to receive these free downloads they always ask: “What challenges do you have in your business?”
Networking events are also a great time to ask these questions. There are a variety of business owners there. Each person may have a different challenge. Then again you may see an uderlying theme to the challenges these businesses are having.
Now that you know that information you can create a product, blog post etc. that will help them solve that problem.
The biggest mistake you can make in your business is to spend hours and hours creating a product that YOU think is what your customer wants only to find that it’s not.
One of the reasons I worked on The Art of Networking video course was because people at networking events told me this was the hardest part for them.
This course helps them to learn not only what networking truly is but how they can enjoy it and have fun making the connections that are vital to the success of their business.
You see? I asked. They told me the problem. I provided a solution!
That’s what you need to do.
Do you regularly communicate with your target audience by asking questions?
