Forming good habits when it comes to writing will help you to accomplish your goals.
What exactly is a habit? It is something that is performed in your subconscious.
You usually don’t think about a habit until you try to either break one or form one.
Here are some examples of habits your may already have.
*Taking a shower
*Brushing your teeth
*Making your bed
You don’t even think about these things you just do them. Just imagine the effort it would take to actively remember how to do each step of those activities. You’d end up being completely exhausted!
The problem comes into play when you are trying to form a new habit. Let’s say for example you want to write a new blog post everyday.
How do you go about forming good habits for that?
Try this suggest to form good habits: Get up every morning to write something. It might be that you need to get up 15 or 2o minutes earlier than usual. This might be the best quiet time for you to write.
It might be easy to get distracted by checking your emails, Facebook etc. but you need to stay focused.
The first thing I like to do is grab either my coffee or tea before starting to write.
To help you form your new habit of writing every morning try this. The night before write down the topic you will be writing about. This way when you get up in the morning you are not sitting at your computer looking blankly at the screen wondering what to write about.
Why is forming good habits so important? I have a friend who has been writing a book for about 3 years. He doesn’t even have chapter 1 finished! Research indicates that it takes 3 to 4 weeks to form a good habit. This means for one month you need to make that extra effort to get up and start your day writing.
It might be helpful to have reminders on your phone, refrigerator, tablet that keep you aware of what you need to do first thing in the morning.
I’m using the morning as an example but if you feel writing before bed works best for you then by all means do it. The important thing is to get that habit started.
As your day progresses you might find it helpful to write down ideas that pop into your head. These ideas might be the inspiration for your chapter, blog post or whatever it is you are writing.
Forming good habits could mean when inspiration hits you immediately write it down!
The way you approach writing your book, article or post can affect the outcome. View your writing sessions as enjoyable, not something that has to be done. Having the right outlook will have you looking forward to this quiet time to sit and write your thoughts.
Remember the more you repeat this process the quicker the habit will form.
I’ve heard people say they’ve been writing a book for years but they can’t find the time to finish it. Wouldn’t you agree this person needs to form a “habit” of writing everyday?
