Have you ever seen the commercial for care.com? The commercial feature the founder Sheila Marcelo Founder and CEO of:.care.com.
The site enables families to connect with millions of caregivers. Check out this great info graphic from the company.
Sheila has had quite a few accomplishments including one of the “10 Most Powerful Women in Boston Tech” by The Boston Globe’s Innovation Economy (2012) and one of the “Top 10 Women Entrepreneurs at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit” (2009).
In my book Sexy, Savvy & Successful we discuss creating a business based on the problems other people have that you can solve.
Sheila did just that, only the problem was one she experienced herself. When she was in College she became a mother with no family to help and support her. She knew how hard it was to find quality daycare so she and her husband could finish school. All she had to rely on was word of mouth for daycare.
If you are a mom you know how hard that can be. Leaving your child is hard enough much less having to go on word of mouth alone.
This is a problem many of us have faced at some point in time.
Knowing the problems she faced Sheila realized founding a technology company that would help families worldwide care for the ones they loved would be the right direction to go. It’s not just about finding day care but also senior care, pet care etc.
What has been the result?
Sheila’s company has 7 million members reaching more than 15 countries with plans to expand.
You might also find it interesting that Sheila is one of the few entrepreneurs to raise over $35 million in Venture Capital funds. The total amount she has been able to raise is now $111 million. All of this since 2006.
In a recent interview on thenextwoman.com Sheila was asked this question by Beth Pitts:
What is one lesson you would like to pass on to other women leaders?
Her answer? “Pay it forward. None of us got where we are alone. We’ve all had great support systems of family, friends, colleagues, mentors, advisors. It’s our turn – our responsibility – to provide that same counsel and sponsorship to the next generation of women”.
