Do you use Google Reader?
I’ve been hearing quite a bit of talk online about Google Reader. Many are disappointed, frustateed and wondering whether this means something more than it is.
I started doing some research on the topic and came up with some interesting findings.
If you don’t know what Google Reader is it is an RSS Feed reading platform that’s been around for about 8 years.
It will however end on July, 2013.
If its so widely popular why would Google retire it? Simply put people are consuming information in a variety of social media platforms. These platforms have news feeds on them. There’s twitter and Facebook just to name a few. You can access your news feed quickly and easily and in many ways these platforms perform in ways that Google isn’t able to.
The more you read the more you see that Google wants us all to be using Google+.
It would appear that now Google has decided to focus on certain aspects in order for it to grow as far as search is concerned. At least that seems to be the theory.
Google has stated that there has been a decline in usage and that’s their reason for shutting it down.
Outraged people have signed a petition to try and get Google to keep it going.
Last month I was in an Author Blog Challenge where social media was discussed. I learned about platforms I never knew existed and it truly is amazing what’s out there for us to read, enjoy and get more exposure for our businesses from.
For example several years ago I decided to create our own wedding magazines. These magazines could be printed or read online by our brides. They had wedding planning tips and inspirational photos for them to enjoy.
Today it’s even easier for a business to create therir own magazine. It’s easier to curate your own content. We’ll discuss that topic in future posts.
What can you do now that Google Reader is retiring? Here’s a quick video I found on the topic.
As the video mentioned there is hope though. There is one company that seems to be getting a lot of attention.
That company is Feedly.
As a matter of fact they have added 10 features to help with the transition.
According to an article on Mashable there are 500,000 Google Reader users and Feedly is willing to meet the challenge of taking them on.
On Feedly’s blog mashable as quoted as saying: “Dump Google Reader For Feedly. All The Cool Kids Are Doing it.”
It will be interesting to see a year or so from now how people feel. Will things be even better than they expected?
Let’s hope so.
