In a previous video on blogging for brand awareness I shared a tip on using opt-ins for list building. One of the things you want to do when setting up your opt-in form is to use the strategy I mention in this video.

After watching this I want you to go back to your opt-in forms and see if you are using a person’s first name.
A great example of why you want a person’s first name is this; today I received an email that said “Hi Buddy”. It really made me stop in my tracks. “Buddy” Clearly this person hadn’t asked me to give my first name and so they used this wording instead of my name.
It would have been better if it said “friend”. But “Buddy”?
That’s why you want a person’s first name when list building. It’s how you are going to communicate and build a business relationship.
Some of my clients have said they feel “funny” asking for a first name. They think that it’s too much to ask a person.
Think about the last time you signed up for a webinar. They want your first and your last name. Sometimes they even ask for your address and phone number! Do you think the majority fill out the form? Yes they do.
Don’t put roadblocks in front of you. Ask people for they first name.
Are your signup forms set up with “first name”?
