As a work from home coach I know there are many challenges you may face.
More than 13.4 million people or 9.5 percent of the workforce now work from home according to the new Census Bureau report.
According to the government about 45% of that figure are self employed individuals.
There’s no doubt working from home can have its benefits.
One major benefit to working from home is that you don’t have that dreaded commute time to look forward to.
To many the thought of working from home is a dream come true. For those who do work from home they realize there can be some pitfalls.
I am going to share with you three of the most common problems people have working from home.
Number 1: Focusing
Getting distracted while working from home can be extremely easy. I’ve discussed this situation with many other entrepreneurs. When children know Dad or Mom’s in the house they tend to think they can go in at any time with questions. Sometimes those working from home get called on to do little things around the house since they are home all day. How can you stop this from happening?
Tip Number: Sit down and have a family meeting. Explain to everyone that just because your office is in your home you still have a job to do and that perhaps they need to “pretend” that you aren’t there.
Just like children need a quite place to do their homework or read a book you need your quite place to get your work accomplished.
When you explain this to your family also mention this is a group effort. The sooner they let you get your work done the sooner you can be with them. You’ll be more available if they let you do what it is you are staying home to do…work!
This goes for your friends and family that know you work from home as well.
Tip number 2: Create a work schedule and tell your family/friends these are the hours you are unavailable. Then stick to it.
I’m sure you’ve been in a hotel where they have the sign on the door that says “do not disturb”. Why not get one of those and put it on your office door?
I remember meeting with one fellow entrepreneur whose office was in his home. On the door he had one of those clocks with moving hands. His family knew that he was working till that time and his office was off limits.
Number 2 You Work Non Stop
In an effort to get your business off and running you may have the tendency to work very long hours.
This could lead to burn out so be very careful.
Remember the days when you worked for someone else and it seemed like you couldn’t get away from that job? You felt stressed and work became a burden.
You don’t want working from home to ever make you feel that way.
You office is in your home so once again you need that schedule.
Do you see a theme here?
It’s called scheduling. You need to schedule your time wisely.
Failing to schedule your work time can lead to disaster.
You may find yourself working longer hours than you expected. That can be remedied by starting your work day and ending it at the same time every day.
I believe that if you stay focused you can get more done and most times in a lot less time by keeping your distractions to a minimum.
Number 3 You Need Motivation
Some people need to have others around them in order to get motivated. Since you are working alone you may start to feel isolated.
Your environment has now changed and you are the only one in the office.
How can you remedy that feeling of isolation?
Here’s three tips you will find helpful.
Tip Number 1: Get together with other business owners in your area.
Tip Number 2: You can also take your work to the local library to give yourself a change of scenery.
Tip Number 3: Perhaps you have a local coffee shop you can visit and get some of your work done there.
Trying a few of these tips may just be what’s needed to make you feel less isolated and more motivated.
Working from home can have many challenges but when you have the proper attitude and mindset you will find yourself enjoying working from home more and more enjoyable.
